Student Climate Commons

Eight students went to the Melbourne Museum to attend the Student Climate Commons: “Careers that care for our wonderous planet”. There we got to hear four speakers share about their jobs and the ways they use their work to care for the planet in unique ways. There were also many career experts around the museum.

Some key takeaways include:

  • Follow your dreams/interests and be open to different and unexpected outcomes.

  • Be willing and open to trial and error, not everything will always go as planned and that’s ok. Don’t give up!

  • Be curious. Look for opportunities, and…

  • Be proactive! Reach out to experts and people in a field or with a job that interests you, volunteer or do work experience.

  • Every job has the capacity to care for the planet.

It was truly uplifting to hear from such successful people and see that they didn’t know where they would end up until it happened. We saw that the pathway wasn’t always perfect, often it was quite messy! You are not defined by a job or a position; you can decide something not right midway through and give something else a go.

Ruffey lake Park Clean Up

In other news from the Environmental Action Group, last Tuesday a group of students participated in a clean up at Ruffey Creek. Thank you to all who helped out, it was a very successful day with over ten bags of rubbish collected!

Thank you for the donations

Another huge thank you to all who donated bikes or blenders for our smoothie bikes, we hope to have them built soon!

Keep an eye out for information about our upcoming events!

Victorian Pride Centre excursion

As part of Queer Club, students visited the Victorian Pride Centre in St Kilda on 23 July. We all met underneath the clocks at Flinders Street station before catching the No. 16 tram to St Kilda.

We were given a tour of the building which opened in 2021, and incorporates the Joy FM studio, a co-working space for LGBTQIA+-related organisations, a bookshop and a merch desk at the front counter across four stories.

Following the tour, we went to St Kilda for lunch (in my case, chips that were allegedly the 'best in St Kilda', according to the testimony of the shop that sold them), and were given an hour to explore, during which students went to the various shops. Returning to the Pride Centre, we spent about an hour in the boardroom discussing various topics and issues important to us, before catching the tram back to Flinders Street.

Overall, it was a great excursion. Personally, I talked to people who otherwise I may not have, visited the Pride Centre for the first time, and had a great time.

Bee Club news

Despite the cold and inactivity of our bees, Bee Club have been busy! We held a 'Working Bee' incursion to process old bee hive frames and turned them into yummy honey and clean wax for our candles. We also made sustainable food wraps and we sold these with the candles at the Bush Dance, along with honey joys and honey-sweetened chai. We are looking forward to some warmer sunny days next term when we can once again check our bees.

Don't forget Bee Club meets Recess Two on Mondays in the Permaculture Room - all welcome!
