International Student Program

Congratulations Yuta Okumura

We would like to congratulate our only 2024 International student Grad, Yuta Okumura.  Yuta arrived at TC in 2022, one of the first international students after our borders reopened.  Yuta has been accepted to a few universities in Japan and has chosen to attend his first choice Uni - Yokohama National University to study International Business. Congratulation and Good Luck Yuta!

Sovereign Hill Excursion

Last month, the international students at TC, accompanied by some teachers, visited Sovereign Hill.

Before I went to the Sovereign Hill, I did some research online. I knew that the name ‘Sovereign’ was associated both with the British Crown and with gold. A sovereign is a one-pound (value, not weight) gold coin. Much of the gold from the goldfields was sent to the mint to be made into these gold coins, initially in London and then to the mints of Sydney and Melbourne. I also found some information online about the Welcome Nugget, the second largest gold nugget in the world.  The Welcome Nugget was a large gold nugget, weighing 2,217 troy ounces 16 pennyweight. (68.98 kg), that was discovered by a group of twenty-two Cornish miners at the Red Hill Mining Company site at Bakery Hill in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, on 9 June 1858.

On 15 November 2024, we went to Sovereign Hill by bus. It took us about two hours to get there. First, we went to a river, the people there said there are some very small gold nuggets in there. I didn't believe it at first, but one of my classmates found gold, even though it was small. I was surprised. After that, I began to look for gold seriously, but I found nothing, I felt disappointed. Then we went to an underground museum and learned about the history of gold rush in Australia. After that, we went to a candle shop to learn how people made candles. It took a lot of patience to do this job. I love this job, but I hate the smell. Finally, we came back to school at 3: 30.

It was a very exciting experience. I think I will remember it forever.

FLAMES Program

On 27 November 2024, the firefighters came to TC language centre and delivered an engaging presentation on house fire safety and the responsibilities of FRV (Fire Rescue Victoria) firefighters. The purpose of this FLAMES incursion was to teach broad emergency protocols and critical fire safety skills to EAL students. The session incorporated interesting activities and demonstrations to ensure students understand fire prevention, evacuation protocols, and the use of fire safety equipment. Throughout the presentation, the firefighters used many visually appealing pictures and shared home fire safety strategies. Moreover, students actively contributed to the class discussion and asked many in-depth questions. Overall, it was an interactive and productive learning experience.

Homestay Training

As part of have an international student program we also have host families who are part of the homestay program.  These families are required to do an annual training hosted by us.  We go through some policies but mostly share experiences and suggestions with a good serve of lunch. This year we held it during of the student free days.

If anyone is keen on hosting an international student, please email Belle Austriaco the International Student Coordinator - bau@tc.vic.edu.au

Happy 18th Birthday Selena

Selena turned 18 in November, and we celebrated with friends and cake. 😊
