Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court
Our Legal Studies class visited the Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court for an eye-opening look at the justice system in action. We got to watch real cases and see how the courtroom works in real life. We also spoke with magistrates, clerks, police prosecutors, and other court staff about their jobs and how they got into law. It was really interesting to see the different roles people play in the legal system. The experience helped us understand our legal rights better and made some of us think about studying law in the future!
Cultural Museums Project Pilot
On Thursday 20th February, 50 students from our Entry and FLE Humanities classes took part in a memorable excursion that brought their classroom learning to life. Accompanied by staff, students explored two significant cultural sites as part of their studies in history, identity and community.
The first stop was the Jewish Museum, where students engaged in a rich, guided learning experience. Through an interactive tour of the museum, a visit to the synagogue, and a model Sabbath ceremony complete with food tasting, students were able to explore Jewish identity, culture, and traditions. Our education guides shared personal insights and stories that deepened students’ understanding of Judaism and Jewish life in Australia.
The second visit took students to the Islamic Museum of Australia, where they were guided through a range of exhibits highlighting the history, contributions, and everyday lives of Muslims. Students heard firsthand stories from Australian Muslims, learning about their experiences growing up and how their faith and culture shape their identities. This immersive experience helped students connect with contemporary Australian narratives and appreciate the diversity within our community.
This enriching day of learning supported students to think critically and empathetically about culture, religion, and the ways people express their beliefs and values in modern society.
Student Reflections
What is the most important thing you learned at the museum?
I now know to never judge a culture just for one incident
That different religions were discriminated against throughout history
How similar the two cultures are
That these religions are quite similar to mine
Art and history of both cultures
the different cultural traditions
What is one thing you with do (or do differently) after your visit to the museums?
I will be less ignorant
Let people know that it's not acceptable to talk about people like that if they say hurtful things
Stand up to racist jokes or comments
I will respect other religions and learn as much as I can about them
Judge differently and be more understanding
Be more inclusive
not to judge a person just by looking at them
I will share what I learned
