"Being in class" focus

Starting on Monday, we will have a renewed whole-school focus on β€˜Being in Class. πŸ””βž‘οΈπŸ«

Why? Because we know that the more students are in class, the greater access they have to learning opportunities, support from staff and connections with classmates.

What will happen:

  • The classroom teacher will mark the roll 5 minutes after class begins.

  • If a student arrives to class after the 5 minute mark, they will be marked β€˜Late’ on the roll.

  • If a student is given permission to leave the classroom, they must return before the 10-minute mark or their teacher will log a chronicle on Compass.

  • With 5 minutes to go at the end of recesses and lunch times yard duty teachers will ask students to go to class.

We would appreciate you reinforcing this focus on 'Being in Class' with your young person at home. Any questions, please don't hesitate to get in contact.

Melbourne Cup: A long-running tradition under scrutiny

The annual Melbourne Cup horse race was held last week on the first Tuesday of November πŸ†πŸŽ. The Cup dates back to 1861, although was originally run on Thursdays πŸ“…. In 1875, the Cup was moved to the second Tuesday of the month (in later years changing to the first Tuesday) to coincide with the Prince of Wales' birthday on 9 November πŸŽ‰πŸ‘‘. As a result, holidays were announced πŸ—“οΈ.

The Melbourne Cup Carnival is a four-day event at Flemington Racecourse 🏟️, contributing over $500 million to Victoria’s economy each year πŸ’°; creating jobs πŸ‘·β€β™€οΈπŸ‘·β€β™‚οΈ, supporting small businesses πŸͺ, and backing local communities 🏘️. According to the Victoria Racing Club, β€œThe Melbourne Cup Carnival was directly responsible for bringing 60,897 people to Victoria [this year], including international guests from 28 countries πŸŒβœˆοΈβ€. This proves that many were eager to visit our state and enjoy the world-class racing πŸ‡, fashion πŸ‘—πŸŽ©, food 🍽️, and entertainment 🎢🎭 that Cup Week offers.

Race-day fashion is taken very seriously πŸ‘€ and each of the four days has its own dress code:

  •  Derby Day is strictly black and white ⚫βšͺ

  • Melbourne Cup Day is renowned for its glamorous and eccentric style featuring bright colours 🌈

  • Oaks Day, also known as Ladies Day, is where racegoers turn to pastels and florals πŸŒΈπŸ‘’

  • Stakes Day is more laid-back and family friendly πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

In recent years, the Cup Carnival has come under increasing scrutiny βš–οΈ and hashtags such as #NupToTheCup have gained momentum on social media πŸ“±. Many people boycott the race due to concerns about gambling 🎰 and animal welfare πŸ΄πŸ’”, as well as the fact that sovereignty has never been ceded on this Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung land πŸͺΆπŸŒΏ where the event takes place. The Cup is often associated with gambling, excess, and wealth πŸ’Έ; things that stand in stark contrast to the realities many Indigenous communities face ✊.

In addition to some families celebrating this event 🎊, many take the opportunity to go on holiday for the unofficial long weekend πŸ–οΈ with many schools, including TC, running alternate programming due to a high number of students away.
