TC School Review Begins on Wednesday

This Wednesday will be the first of four days spent as part of the 4 yearly review of the Strategic direction of TC. There will be lesson observations and student focus groups taking place throughout the day with a review team comprising of staff and students from the school, Department of Education representatives and other education experts.

After this 4 day process, which is spread out over the term, the new strategic direction of the school will be devised and shared with the community in term 2.

2022 TC College Council Elections

School Councils play a key role in Victorian government schools. Participating as a school council member is a rewarding and challenging experience. The School Council supports the principal to provide the b​​est possible educational outcomes for students.

The TC College Council comprises of parents, students, the Principal and staff. Community members are also welcomed.  

It is that time of the year when, we as a Community, conduct College Council Elections. TC parents, students and staff are welcome to nominate for a place in their respective categories. All parents or guardians of students enrolled at the school are eligible to vote for the category of parent membership, staff vote for Department of Education and Training employee membership, and students vote for student membership. Community members are co-opted by the school council.

The timeline for returning nominations and the nomination forms to use are available by clicking on the below link. They can be returned to the school via email (wha@tc.vic.edu.au) or dropped off at the General Office by Friday 4th March 2022.

TC Animal Expo - Thursday 24th February 4-6pm

Community Integrated Learning - Mind, Body and Spirit

This year TC is introducing Community Integrated Learning Weeks. The goal is to have a year full of community, togetherness, and creativity! Each term Templestowe College will hold a special Community Integrated Learning themed week. For this terms theme "Body, Mind, Spirit" students will be exploring all things related to the body, how we think and feel, mental health, movement, and brain science. Over the next three terms, aspects of the themes (Global Citizenship, Our Place on Country, Earth Week) will be discussed in their classes and during Community events, build shared experiences and a strong sense of belonging and connectedness.

The week's feature event is the Swimming Carnival on Tuesday, February 22nd. This day will be filled with community events, live music, games, yoga, circus skills, BBQ, water slides, visits from Headspace and Manningham Youth and of course, swimming races! It is going to be a great day and all students are expected to attend and enjoy activities that appeal to them. There will also be a range of other events offered for the Body, Mind, Spirit festival including film screenings, seminars, before school and lunchtime activities. 

The VCAL students are running a BBQ to raise funds for Laps For Life. Snags are available ($3 each) a vegan option is also available. On the day, there will also be an auction to throw water on a teacher of your choosing. Guessing competitions will be running as well (guess how many sausages we sell and guess how many laps TC swims). Each of these will cost a gold coin for your guess and the winners of the competitions will get a $30 gift voucher for either Village or Rebel Sport. Students and staff will also have the opportunity to swim laps on the day to raise money for Laps For Life. The charity works with youth on suicide prevention and aims to improve the mental health of young people. All funds raised will go to the charity. Students need to make sure to come with lots of spare change to help raise money for Laps For Life!

TC's resident circus practitioner Stephanie will be running circus workshops during the pool party on Tuesday and Friday during recess. She has a degree in Circus Arts and has performed all over the world. She also specialises in Icarian Games and Tightwire! On Tuesday, there will be 30 spots available per workshop (there will be more spots available for free play)

In the light of the Body, Mind, Spirit Festival, English teachers Michael Allan and Michelle Parker are launching a podcast! Their podcast centres all-around student voice and sharing some of the conversations they're having with a wider audience. The aim of the podcast is "to keep our English classes more connected so that we can share ideas between the multiple classes and electives that we have running. We wanted to give students more agency over their work and ideas, so we thought that having a podcast would be an engaging way where people could record their thoughts and have them heard by other classes". Students and Staff will be able to find the podcast on TC Stream and Community Teams pages.

During the week other events and activities include Lit Club for book lovers run by Natasha Bossong. The Animals committee are having an open night on Thursday, February 24th. Featuring guest presenters with horses, native animals, and all sorts of furry creatures, this is a night not to be missed, booking is essential through the link on Compass. Happy Sad Man screening, a very special opportunity to meet and chat with acclaimed Director Genevieve Bailey and see her award-winning film on Wednesday 6:30-8:30 pm. The event is free but bookings are essential via Compass.

Week 5 Term 1 – Body, Mind, Spirit Festival Feb 21-25

Exploring all things related to the body, how we think and feel, mental health, movement, and brain science.

Each term we will hold a special Community Integrated Learning themed week. During this week, students will explore aspects of this theme in their classes and during Colour Community events with the aim of building shared experiences and a strong sense of belonging and connectedness. This term, the theme will be Body, Mind and Spirit.

The week’s feature event is the Swimming Carnival on Tuesday Feb 22nd. This day will be filled with community events, live music, games, yoga, circus skills, BBQ, water slides, and of course, swimming races. It is a brilliant day and all students are expected to attend and enjoy activities that appeal to them. Next week we will send out the consent forms for the day. It is vital that parents return the forms received through Compass so that students can attend.

We are Recruiting

Here at TC we are well known for our staff development in developing high capacity leaders, for our school community, for other schools and the education system. Part of the exciting things at TC is that with a healthy turnover of staff we have a continual flow of staff with new ideas, skillsets, diverse life experiences and backgrounds adding value to our school community and our current staff mindset around challenging the status quo.

It is with this that we are pleased to be now recruiting for some key leadership roles within the school. One of our Assistant Principals, Natasha, was appointed to the role of Principal of a school in Tasmania late in term 4 of last year, and one of our current Assistant Principals Aaron has secured a very unique and exciting position for 12 months setting up a school for twice exceptional students in America. This position will commence in term 3. This means that we are recruiting two Assistant Principals, one for 12 months and one ongoing, as well as a VET co-ordinator who will co-ordinate our ever expanding VET program.

VCE Success Strategies Presentation for TC Students and Families

In 2022, TC is taking a focus on supporting VCE students achieve their best. 'VCE Success Strategies' is a presentation delivered by Success Integrated. This is one of of multiple approaches aimed at supporting students, (and families), with VCE. Learn about strategies and practical ideas to support study and workload throughout the year.

COVIDSafe Practice: This event will be capped at 150 people to meet/comply with COVID-safe regulations/planning. In line with DET Regulations, students attending the event will not be asked about their vaccination status, but non students (adults) will need to check in and show that they are fully vaccinated.

Rapid Antigen Tests Available for Collection - Round 2

A reminder that the second round of RAT Tests are available for collection from the General Office. These can be collected by students. The intention are that these are to be used next week and the week after. We have not heard any news on whether this is a program that will be continued beyond then. We will let you know when we hear any more around this.

Valentines Day Fundraiser

This year for Valentine's Day, a group of TC students have been raising money and awareness for Food Bank Australia! This charity is a not-for-profit, non-denominational and federated organisation operating in every state and territory in Australia. Their goal is to provide good quality food for all Australians. Food Bank works with 2,950 frontline charities and 2,890 school breakfast programs to get over 87.9 million meals out to Australians suffering from food insecurity every year.

This week on Thursday and Friday, the group of students were outside of the Hub selling Ferrero Rochers to students and staff. Donators were able to get chocolate delivered to siblings, friends, other staff members or even themselves! During classes on Valentine's Day (Monday), the chocolates will be hand-delivered with a personalised card to the recipients. Student Volunteer Archana decided to get involved in the cause because she believes "sending someone chocolate on Valentine's Day can brighten their day and we should spread love to all no matter what. Food Bank is also a great organisation with an even greater cause."

Reporting of Positive RAT (oR PCR) Test

If your child reports a positive RAT test result, please let the school know by emailing connect@tc.vic.edu.au and follow the instruction below (this has been copied and pasted from the DET information sent to us):

“If staff or students receive a positive test result at any time, they must report this through the Department of Health system (Rapid antigen tests | Coronavirus Victoria) or via the coronavirus hotline at 1800 675 398.

Students (or their parents) must also report a positive result to their school, either through the VicEd COVID portal or by phone or written notification; this is so the school can support them, record that they will be absent while in 7-day isolation, and let the rest of the school community know there has been a positive case onsite and that they should monitor for symptoms.

All students and staff who return a positive result from a rapid antigen test should also follow the latest advice at https://www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/rapid-antigen-tests.

Students who report a positive result must isolate for seven days and not attend school during that period.

Where a student is a household contact of a positive case (that is, they have spent more than four hours with someone who has COVID-19 inside a house, accommodation, or care facility) they must inform the school and isolate for seven days and not attend school during that period.

A reminder that we will send an email to families that is a Department of Education template should we have positive cases on site at TC. If you receive one of these, please read it and pass on the information to your student.

Students Riding to School and Bike Storage

We have two bike rack spaces for students to secure their bikes when riding to and from school. 

The first is by the Administration entrance to A Wing and the second is along the side of S Wing nearest to the Permaculture and Animals spaces. 

All students with bikes must use these designated spaces for bike storage throughout the day.

We look forward to seeing as many students as possible riding bikes to school as we all look for different ways to reduce of environmental footprint.
