International Student Program

The TC international program currently has 63 students studying with us. Students come from China, Germany, Japan, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Singapore and Vietnam. We also recently had nine temporary students come for a few weeks as a short-term experience for their summer holidays.

Snake safety

Snake safety 🐍

Mr. Sadler visited the Language Centre and gave us a wonderful lesson on snake safety. We not only learned about the four types of snakes found in Victoria—tiger snakes, black snakes, brown snakes and copperhead snakes—and their characteristics, but also how to administer first aid after a snakebite and how to apply bandages correctly.

The teacher demonstrated what to do if someone is bitten by a snake. It is always important to ensure the area is safe and that the snake has moved away. Call an ambulance (000) and ask the casualty to lie down and remain as still as possible to minimise the spread of venom through the body and lymphatic system.

We examined a snakebite first aid kit and its contents and took turns locating the bandages. We applied the bandages firmly and directly over the bite site to provide effective compression, making sure not to cut off blood circulation. A splint, such as a board or a branch, can be used to immobilise the limb after bandaging. It is also helpful to mark the bite site, if known, and to note the time of the bite, if possible.

Through observation and touch, we learned how snakes move, where their vertebrae are located and what their physical characteristics are. Some students also asked how snakes reproduce. The teacher explained that some snakes lay eggs that later hatch, while others give birth to live young.

PTV & City Excursion - Language Centre

This semester, in our Social Studies class at the Language Centre, we learned how to use Melbourne’s PTV system and how to travel by bus, train and tram.

On August 19th we went on a trip to Melbourne City. The journey took us from Templestowe College to the State Library of Victoria and Melbourne Central. First we took the No. 908 bus to QV and then walked to the State Library. The library was quiet, majestic and beautiful - we took lots of photos there!

The State Library of Victoria is Australia’s oldest public library, one of the first free libraries in the world, and the busiest public library in the country. We had a wonderful time exploring it, and we took the opportunity to have a read while we were there. After that, we took a tram to Flinders Street Station.

Flinders Street Station is historic and grand. Melbourne's first railway station was built on the Flinders Street property in 1854. Instead of the imposing architecture we are familiar with today, it was a much smaller and simpler construction. From there Flinder St we transferred to the Metro and travelled to Melbourne Central Station where we had lunch and went shopping, which made for a perfect ending to the day.

Although the trip lasted only one day, it taught us many practical skills such as how to travel independently by bus or train and how to buy food or other items on our own. There were many unforgettable moments from this wonderful day in Melbourne.

Parent Presentation - Language Centre

On September 15th we invited parents and guardians to the Language Centre where the students presented some of the things they have been working on in their different classes.  Parents were then able to talk to the different Language Centre teachers to get some feedback regarding the student's progress.

Study abroad students

We also want to wish Kota (below left) and Chloe (below right) all the best after completing 1 term as study abroad students.  Kota is returning to Japan and Chloe to China. Good luck!
