As we approach the end of term 1 this is a great time to reflect on how we have started the year as a community for 2021. We have endured challenges through this term, in particular the snap lockdown that occurred, but also many positives for which we can all be grateful. Many of these positives fit in with our ever-present vision of “to co-create high quality learning experiences within an inclusive and supportive community”. 

It was great to be able to start the year with our newly completed “Cage” Astroturf area. Whilst this has allowed us to have another outdoor space for sport, it is also the beginning of the next stage of development of S Wing as a major space in the school. The versatility of the space was also seen with the recently held community outdoor cinema movie night held. This was a well attended event that we look forward to holding again in the future. 

A major highlight for this term was the Swimming Carnival held at Aquarena. This event really did have a carnival feel and something that everyone could enjoy. In term 2 we hold our Athletics carnival which again promises to be a great day for our students to build a sense of community. 

This term we also held our first ever Graduate “March” Dinner. This event was organised based on Student demand and allowed us to feel another sense of normality as our 2021 Grad students were able to have a dinner and dance, something that we all took for granted pre-COVID19. Our plans are already well underway for the 2020 Grad dinner and the Senior Formal, all to take place later this year. 

In a sign of true student agency, our 2021 Grad Students, led by our School Captains, have demonstrated transferable skills far beyond those that will be measured in exams in organising the 2021 Grad Camp. We had initially not been able to book this due to COVIDSafe restrictions, but with the lifting of these restrictions and true student leadership we now have a camp booked with over 130 students booked to attend in term 2. 

Looking at the big picture in term 2 as we move forward, we should and will always continue to strive for improvement as a community and as individuals. Being in a community as part of an unpredictable and volatile society always throws new challenges at us, and we will continue to strive to improve and as a school support each other to be better every day. This takes the form of in many spaces, be it within the classroom in a specific class, or as just human beings and the way we treat each other.  

I would like to wish everyone a safe break. I want to encourage everyone to be wary of the time you all spend in front of screens or with your mobile phone in your hand. We live in a beautiful place and I want to encourage everyone to make the most of this by getting outside, being healthy and active over the holiday break. I look forward to seeing everyone return for term 2.

Swimming Carnival 2021

Swimming Carnival 2021 was an extremely exciting event to celebrate as a school community, especially considering only a week prior we were in a snap lockdown learning from home! The day was filled with many fun activities such as the inflatable obstacle course , swimming races, diving competitions, TC music, art displays, dungeons and dragons and relays between competitive students and teachers. The VCAL students also ran various novelty events on the day.

The winning Community was RED with an astonishing score of 491 points. In second place was GREEN with 306. BLUE came in third with 251 points and last of all GOLD came out with a solid 233 points.

In the last week of term, TC students enjoyed a outdoor cinema watching Back To The Future on our new astroturf area behind SWING.

Community Music

Clean up Australia Day

On of our connect activities this term was to give the school a big tidy up for Clean Up Australia Day.

robotics

Melbourne has had our first robotics competition since 2019 on February 27, 2021! Despite all the impediments 2020 threw at us, our Templestowe college students worked hard over remote learning and did fantastic at out first competition.

In the Junior IQ Robotics division, Templestowe’s teams, Thomas Radford, Jamie Smith & William Melville , won all of the trophies. The 'Excellence Award', the 'Robot Skills Award' and the 'Team Work Award'. They showed determination and perseverance which showed in their robot design and autonomous programming.

The Senior V5 Robotics division did awesome too. Abbas Khan & Cooper Caird’s team and Mal Helliotis, Ben Goldfarb & Leonid Chizhevskiy’s team won the competition, winning the 'Tournament Champions Award. They too have been worked hard all through remote learning and have been looking forward to their first robotics competition.

Environmental Science - Werribee Zoo

Our 3-4 Environmental Science class has been busy learning about the importance of maintaining biodiversity this term. We have learnt that it is important not to put ourselves first and that all species are worth saving, regardless of if we find them interesting, cute or useful. We have done some fun activities such as a class competition ‘Fight for the ugly ones too’, water analysis at Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and a ‘measuring biodiversity’ workshop at Werribee Zoo, learning about conservation management of the super cute but threatened, eastern barred bandicoot. The students have finished the term experts on a chosen threatened species, which they presented about to the class in their first SAC. I am very impressed with the overall high standard of their work and passion for sustaining our unique wildlife. If this is the future, then we are in good hands!

Café Culture - Egons

The Café Culture students have been busy this term making awesome café food and learning how to make coffee in the canteen. Early on in the term they walked up to Templestowe village and were given a personalized tour of Egon cakes by the owner Gary. Gary has worked there since his Dad owned the Bakery and is now the proud owner himself. Once the students had seen the operation side of things Gary then handed out fresh jam doughnuts and drinks free! After their visit the students then went to Café Machiato two doors up and bought lunch and drinks. Here a staff member spoke to them about working hours, coffee history and how her working day went. The students then walked back to TC will full tummies and great café knowledge.

Turtle Camp

Turtle Camp Reflections

Twenty students chose to give up a week of Term 1 to go and help the turtles up at Gunbower Park, near the Murray. We drove up on Monday the 22nd of March and came home exhausted but elated on Friday the 26th. The students spent the first day travelling, setting up camp and then going on an exciting night walk. We saw possums, tawny frogmouths, a gecko and lots of beautiful golden orb weaving spiders.

The next two days saw us looking for recently dug nests along the banks of Gunbower Creek. This was hard work as the turtles camouflage them. The students would then mark each nest with a flag, volunteers from Turtles Australia would come along, record the location of the nest on a GPS and collect data about its condition. Many of the nests had been raided by foxes during the night. This meant that we found many eaten turtle eggs and even some entirely eaten out turtle shells. This was pretty sad work, as the foxes find and destroy about 99% of the nests. Any undisturbed nests we found we covered with wire fencing to protect the eggs whilst they sat for a year to develop.

On the Thursday we went around last year’s nests and dug up the hatchlings so they could be safely put into the river system. This will improve their chance of survival from 1% to about 50%. The students loved releasing the turtles, many of them were as small as a 50 cent coin. Graeme was our guide and taught us a huge amount about the three wonderful turtles that live in this area. He was full of amazing information and left us all feeling like we wanted to join Turtles Australia to help with this great cause. Students started to discuss a range of fund raisers that we could do to help support the turtles. Graham told us that turtle numbers were showing a rapid decline and that immediate action was necessary for us to prevent these species also falling to extinction.

Overall we had a wonderful time and we would all like to thank Duncan and Kate for taking us there and then taking great care of us.

MAP CAMP

MAP has traditionally held farm camps in term 1 of each year, where students live and work together in (occasional) harmony. The interdependence generated through these activities brings students fresh understanding of each other and creates strong bonds.

We are having to rework our farm camp plans and negotiate Covid restrictions, leading us to organise (great thanks to Sando!) a 3-day activity-based camp in the second week of term. We could describe for you the joys of gently trailing a small stingray while snorkelling or poling under low bridges while on (or sometimes off) stand-up paddleboards, making plaster-cast fossils in the beach sand or listening to Dr Seuss’s THE LORAX while lying within the beautiful local forest.

But the major aims of the camp were those built around these activities. Students spent active time with peers they were unused to or did not yet know well, together they erected tents they had not seen before – and there were no instructions! They served food to the whole community, they entertained each other, played games and battles with each other, and on a special last night, laid on a hill under the moon (and amidst the mosquitoes) reflecting on what they had discovered about themselves and about others in their time at Anglesea.

The construction of a vital inter-connected community is vital to a fully functioning Montessori environment, and this started our year off beautifully.

outdoor elective camp

Our Outdoor Education classes headed off for a Journey Based Trip to further develop the skills learnt in class. Our groups hiked over the Baw Baw plateau in near 0 degree temperatures, before an overnight rafting trip down the Thompson River, and we finish off the week Mountain Bike Riding!

As we move into Term Two, the group will continue to work on their Mountain Bikes Skills and begin their planning and preparation for the next adventure!

New Year Celebrations!🎆

Lunar New Year – This year lunar new year fell on 12th of February and celebrations go until 26th of February. The international program celebrated by inviting all the international students to a Sunday afternoon buffet at China Bar Burwood on the 28th of February. Not everyone could make the Sunday feast, but those that attended enjoyed the variety and chats with friends. We have students from China, Vietnam and Korea that celebrate this holiday.

Nowruz – Iranian New year was also celebrated this term on the 20th of March this year. In the last 5 years we have always hosted 1 or 2 students from Iran. This year we have two International Grad and two local Iranian students who celebrated in their EAL class with some Iranian drinks, treats, and snacks.

Birthday Celebrations 🎊

Happy 18th Birthdays - The international team like to do a small celebration for the international students that turn 18. We provide some cake and snacks for the kids on this milestone day. Some of them may not celebrate otherwise.

Happy Birthday to RJ Chen, Davison Chen, and Maxine Siu.

Our 2021 Grads have started the year in high spirits, enjoying a bonding day on their first day back, receiving their graduate hoodies and a sausage sizzle lunch. Later in the term we celebrated making it half way with all day raisin toast and PJ day, the flannel was definitely popular! The other highlight for the term was the Grad Dinner, a new night of entertainment for the cohort to celebrate the year ahead in their finest outfits. Everyone had a great night dancing and getting to know each other.

VCAL Amazing Race Excursion  

On Thursday the 18th of March, all of VCAL met at Flinders Street Station at 9am where we had a quick meeting. We where then put into our groups and split up from there to go our separate ways. We were given a list of landmarks to find so we went to the places on the list that we were given. A few places we had to go were the Immigration Museum, Aquarium and Marvel Stadium.  

We had to get a photo of our group at each place we went to and every photo was worth points. We met at Victoria Market at 12pm to have lunch with everyone. While we were there, we explored the market and got hot jam donuts which was on the list of things to do in order to gain points.   

After lunch, we went back out to try and earn as many points as possible before we all met back at Flinders Street Station at 2:30pm.  

It was a really fun day and good to work with people we don’t normally work with. We also enjoyed seeing different things in the city that we hadn’t seen before.

Young Workers Presentation

On the 15th of February, Tim from The Young Workers Association (YWA) visited TC. Tim worked with both VCAL class to educate us on bullying and harassment at work and how to go about dealing with it. Among other things we learnt about what harassment in the workplace looks like, how we can find out if we are being paid correctly and what w can do about it if we aren't and were given resources and ways to combat a range of issues we may experience in the workplace. It was a highly useful talk and I am confident I can use these resources if I ever fin=d myself in that situation.

Aquarena OHS Induction and Swim Test

On March 1, both Senior and Intermediate VCAL went on an excursion to Aquarena, as a part of our Occupational Health and Safety Unit. While at Aquarena, Katarina spoke to us about OHS. This included evacuation procedures, how they manage hazards around the pools and in the plant rooms, emergency procedures as well as the procedures the staff have to follow to ensure that everyone on site stays safe and healthy.

The Intermediate VCAL students went on to do a range of activities around Aquarena. This included undertaking risk assessments of the outside pool, inside pool and an area of the students choosing.

Meanwhile Senior VCAL undertook a swimming test for the Sailing Camp they will be going on later in the year. The swimming test included floating in the water for 10 minutes with a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) followed by swimming 100m in under 4 minutes.

All in all, it was a really good day for VCAL. It was great to see what we have been learning about in class applied in real world situations.

Fire Safety

VCAL students recently commenced their Cert II in Public Safety (Firefighting) This started on the 2nd of March. So far we have covered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) involved with fighting different types of fires and have learnt how to bowl hoses and use a variety of hose gauges. Throughout the remainder of the course we will also cover how to fight a variety of fires, fire extinguisher use, using a range of fire fighting equipment, etc. We will also undertake fire warden training and gain our Level II First Aid. Fire safety training will run Period 4 every Tuesday, finishing on the 27th of July. The skills we are learning will help us in our chosen pathways but will also be an asset in everyday life.

Overview

Seniors

In Term 1 TC sent out five Volleyball teams including three boys teams and two girls teams. This was a record number of Volleyball teams to compete for TC. The competition which took place at Dandenong Stadium saw both the boys and girls A teams securing a win in the Mullum Division. During the EMR finals both teams won one of their three games.

The best players for the day were: Tahlia Leeson, Sienna Kardaras and Emily Maltezos and Zac Anderson, Noah Gorgievski and Will Rimmington. A special congratulations to these students for their outstanding effort.

We look forward to seeing our Grads represent TC in Sport in Terms 2 & 3.

Intermediate

Term 1 saw TC’s mixed cricket, boys tennis and five volleyball teams (three boys teams and two girls teams) compete in interschool sporting events. Like for our Seniors, this was a record number of Volleyball teams to compete for TC. It was great to see so many of our students involved in interschool sport after missing out during 2020.  It would be fantastic to continue to build on this great participation as the year progresses.

A special congratulations to the boys tennis team who were successful in winning their competition: Hudson Jones, Ivan Leon, Nicholas Collias, Light Ossai, Georgios Georgakis and Siddath Ramani. Good luck in the EMR finals.

U14

A disrupted 2020 meant that our U14s missed out on their first chance to represent TC in the interschool sports competition. Luckily this year TC was able to send out a mixed baseball team, three boys tennis teams and a boys and a girls volleyball teams to compete against other schools in our region. There were great rates of participation and interest levels within these teams and it would be excellent to see this high level of participation continue from students in our U14 bracket for the remainder of the year, we would love to see more new faces signing up for the sports on offer.

Our tennis boys were successful in winning their competition. Congratulations to Edward Fiddian, Oliver Toumbourou, Joshua Yip and Alessandros Zambas. Best of luck in the EMR finals.

Entry

This Term our Entry students had their first chance to compete in TC sport. Representing the school was a mixed baseball team, a mixed tennis team, one girls volleyball and two boys volleyball teams.

A big thank you to all those students who participated during these events, a fun day was had by all because of your enthusiastic attitudes and great sportsmanship.

Unfortunately a number of students who signed up to participate in these sports did not show up on the day which meant that other students missed out on attending the competition. This was very disappointing for those that missed out – a reminder that if you do sign up for a sport please show your commitment to the team and respect for others and show up on the day.

Congratulations to all who participated in these events and we look forward to seeing many more faces signing up and participating in TC sport throughout the remainder of the year.

Tennis

Intermediate Tennis

It was an overcast and quite chilly start to the day for intermediate tennis. It didn’t take long though to warm up, as our A Boys team started with a win in their first game. The winning theme had set in and become quite contagious, as the team went through the day undefeated. I must congratulate the team not only on their efforts on the court, but off it as well. Their behaviour and sportspersonship was excellent and I commend them for this. Congratulations Nick, Georgios, Hudson, Ivan, Light and Sid. Bring on the next round!

U14 Tennis

Jane Bunn had forecast an overcast day and she was correct, as it was quite chilly morning for intermediate tennis. It didn’t take long though to warm up, as our A Boys team started with a win in their first game. The winning theme had set in and become quite contagious, as the B Boys also had early wins. The scene was set as the A Boys had made the final against Mullauna, a goliath battle took place and victory was ours. A big congratulations to Jed, Omar, Ed, Oliver, Joshua, Samyar and Alessi. Bring on the next round!

Entry Tennis

On Monday the 15th of March Evie Gibney, Grace Richards, Prad Shankar and Nancy Wang competed in the Entry Tennis competition. It was a perfect sunny day for tennis and everyone had a ball. Evie and Grace made a perfect pair and continued to improve their skills throughout the day. Evie did a great job of sharing her knowledge with Grace, teaching her the rules and how to move on the court between points. Nancy was up to the challenge and due to the small team numbers on the day played in the boys competition with Prad. Nancy and Prad played very well together against some tough rivals. Thank you to the four of you for representing TC in such a positive way.

Baseball

On Thursday 18th March the U14 Baseball team ventured to Gilbert Park, FTG to enter a round-robin baseball competition against the likes of Warrandyte, Heathmont, Ashwood, Mullauna and Auburn. The team managed to win their first game against Ashwood 4-1 and then lost to Auburn 5-2. However, the team’s percentage was good enough to put them in the 2nd semi-final and they managed to beat Warrandyte 5-2, which put TC in third place behind Heathmont and Mullauna. A great effort considering the level of practice they had before the matches 😊

Cricket

Intermediate cricket headed out earlier this term for a round robin competition at Donvale Reserve. We had a great team that consisted of a few regular cricketers and some students newer to the sport. Although we didn’t make it through to the finals we performed well as a team and had a few moments of individual brilliance including a number of huge 6’s that were hit across the neighbouring Mitcham Road and lead to a few lost balls – Well done team.

Swimming

EMR Swimming

Today, our sixteen strong team made their way to Aquanation in Ringwood, where we faced off against 55 other schools at EMR Swimming. We were busy all day in the pool, with competitors in most events. From what I witnessed in and out of the pool I could not be prouder of the team. We came home with a total of 22 medals, two records and six students advancing to the state finals. As the day wrapped up, we heard an announcement that out of the 56 schools, we came fourth overall. Another huge achievement from the team! Congratulations to Charlotte, Abbie, Alex, Caleb, Ocean, Heath, Idan, Tiana, Ginger, Alicia, Imogen, Charlie, Thomas, Sid, Chloe & Joel.

Mullum Division Swimming

TC did a fantastic job during the division swimming carnival with all students swimming representing TC outstandingly. All students came away with first place ribbon on the day, with our whole team going to Regional swimming - a huge achievement!
Congratulations to all swimmers on your performance during the carnival, especially to those who broke records and beat personal record times.

Congratulations to Thomas Radford, Charlie Norton and Alicia Licorni for winning the Mullum Division age group championship medals.

ESDP

ESDP senior basketball ventured out for the first time in 2021 to the annual Rowville Invitational tournament on April 31st. The Senior girls - made up mostly of year 10 aged girls - went 4-0 defeating Rowville, Maribyrnong, St Monicas and Western Heights Secondary College. The senior boys went 2-2, losing closely to Rowville and Maribyrnong and defeating Frankston High School and Western Heights Secondary College. It was great to get into competition again and next term ESDP will compete in the Basketball Victoria 3x3 touranments, the Victorian College Championships and Junior and Intermediate age groups of the Rowville Invitational Tournament.

Math

FLE Math students have explored a range of patterns using different shapes, materials, and ideas. They have generated sequences of number patterns and extended this to an algebraic representation or algorithm. To display their understanding, they produced tables and graphs which illustrated the relationships on the cartesian plane. As a summary of their learning, they worked in groups to produce a visual representation (poster) of the relationships between patterns and numbers.

Science

Entry Science

Entry Science have spent their first term in the lab learning all about how to work safely and ‘scientifically’. We have focused on skills like using equipment to measure quantitatively and using our senses and words to describe qualitatively. We learnt to light the Bunsen burners and demonstrated research skills in our ‘Passion in Science’ projects.

We finished the term with an engineering design challenge to design a cup that could keep water hot for longer. Some of the designs were fantastic, and kept hot water more than 15 degrees C hotter than an insulated cup over 10 minutes!

Solutions Using Science

In Solutions students have been exploring the big question, ‘Should we build a colony on Mars?’. We looked at reasons why we might want to shift to a ‘Planet B’ and the types of people who would want to go and why, as well as who would be selected. We looked at some of the challenges of establishing a colony there and then spent the bulk of the term better understanding the process of getting there via rockets.

We learnt all about chemical reactions and how they can create explosive thrust, and how to increase a reaction in a number of different experiments. We then shifted our focus to the forces acting on rockets and developed our understanding of vector diagrams to show these forces in a diagram.

We asked some students to write an application to go to Mars. Here are some of their responses:

Dear NASA,
This application is going to tell you why you shouldn't consider me for this role. I don't think what you’re doing is good and it would be much cheaper for you to just save Earth. I really, really don't want to go to Mars.

Jewellery

Elite Dance

Last Friday the school’s Elite dance team received their jackets!! They will be competing in their first competition at the beginning of June, performing Jazz, Lyrical and Hip-Hop pieces.

Backyard Permaculture

Permaculture have been busy constructing a path to SWING.

Top Screen

On Tuesday 23rd March, the opening night of Top Screen took place at ACMI at Federation Square. It was so wonderful to hear and be apart of such an exciting night that celebrates students achievements and hard work in Media. Sheoaka was awarded 2nd place in the Juror’s Prize. The Top Screen Jury Prize recognises outstanding filmmaking talent based on a range of criteria, including originality and conceptual development. Sheoaka’s short animation was selected as one of the top films of 2020 and will be screened at ACMI as a part of the festival. Top Screen is part of the annual VCE Season of Excellence, which also includes Top Arts at the NGV, Top Designs at Melbourne Museum and the Top Acts concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre. Congratulations to Sheoaka and we look forward to seeing many more animations from you in the future!

Top Arts

Top Arts at the NGV Federation Square showcases the exceptional work of students who have completed Art or Studio Arts as part of their VCE in an extraordinary past year. Comprising work selected from applicants across Victoria, the exhibition encompasses a range of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital and mixed media. It celebrates the outstanding abilities and the diverse concerns of our newest emerging talents and is certain to provide inspiration to visitors of all ages. The exhibition includes the opportunity to view selected developmental folios and to hear from current exhibitors about their inspiration, ideas and practices.

1300 applications, 40 finalists and 3 TC students

A massive congratulations to Erin Kim, Miah Johnson and Pearl Butler on a fantastic achievement. Demi and Aaron enjoyed the opening night of Top Arts with the girls and their families.

Top Design

Top Design at Melbourne Museum showcases 95 works selected by panels of expert educators in each area of study including VCE Media, Product Design and Technology, Systems Engineering, Theatre Studies and Visual Communication Design, as well as VCE VET Creative and Digital Media and Integrated Technologies.

This year's exhibitors provide us a glimpse into the future of design and how aspects of design can be incorporated into many features of our ever-evolving world, including our health, environmental and creative industries.

This year, students also had to undergo an additional challenge, with the extraordinary experience of a global pandemic and one of the world’s longest lockdowns in Victoria. Students faced an array of challenges that affected their timelines and the creation of their final product, with learning remotely and an inaccessibility to teachers, school workshops and materials. Despite these difficulties, the class of 2020 have shown tremendous innovation in isolation, demonstrating initiative and determination as they creatively overcame the challenges of last year.

2020 VCE Award Winners

Due to COVID and 2020 VCE results being released at the end of December we were unable to celebrate the successes of TC students VCE results. Our VCE awards are awarded to TC students who have achieved the highest study score in any given subject. In Term 1 we hosted a morning tea for current students and gradate student received their awards in the mail. Congratulations to all our high achievers.

We are so pleased that this year we have been able to continue with our TC Consultancy PD Days.

These TC Consultancy PD days provide an opportunity for other schools and educators to explore our “Take Control Model” of education through a half day immersion of TC. This half day program is led by our Principal Peter Ellis, who has been a member of the school community since 2010, supported by a number of student consultants from TC.

The PD includes;

• An explanation of why schools need to change

• Presentation and explanation of the TC model

• Full school tour interacting with students and staff

• Tea and Coffee on arrival and morning tea prepared by one of our student catering businesses

• Discussion time for unstructured questions to Principal and students employed by the TC Consultancy

• Access to select resources and school documents

Our Café Culture students were employed to cater for our first TC Consultancy since lockdown began. This experience offers them real world experiences by preparing the menu, ordering the ingredients and serving their food. Their Barista training was also valued by the participants on their arrival.

We are looking forward to welcoming the many different schools/educators that have already booked into their own PD Days this year.
