Term 2 Newsletter

The Term 2 newsletter highlights what an exciting term the TC community had, with a massive focus on our second community integrated learning week, Global Citizenship, there was so much to celebrate both inside and outside the classroom

KEY DATES FOR TERM 3

Below are some of our key dates for next term repeated from the last next week @TC in term 2. This is not the entire list, but one which will help families to plan ahead. This is a very busy term as we spend a lot of time on the course planning process so that students are able to select their 2023 subjects after the Course Counselling Day:

  • Subject Expo - Wed 27th July (Week 3). 2:30 – 4:30pm. Classes run us normal on this day,

  • Student Parent Teacher Interviews Option Day 1 (Online) - Thu 28th July (Week 3) – Provisional. No lessons running onsite.

  • Student Parent Teacher Interviews Option Day 2 (In Person) - Fri 5th August (Week 4) – Provisional. No lessons running onsite.

  • Athletics Carnival/Indigenous Games - Tue 16th August (Week 6). All students participate in his day.

  • Course Counselling Day (Online) - Wed 17th August (Week 6). All day. No lessons running onsite.

  • Staff Professional Practice Day & GAT Exam (all VCE Unit 3/4 and VCAL Students) - Wed 7th September (Week 9). All day. No lessons running onsite.

For those not aware of the purpose of these events, here is a very brief overview:

Subject expo: An opportunity for families to speak to TC staff to see what is involved within a subject. We have a comprehensive subject selection website (shared at the beginning of the process in term 3) which we always recommend to use first as a resource, and this event can be used to ask questions. There are also a few information sessions running through the afternoon.

Course Counselling Day: all students and their families will meet online with their Connect Mentor to confirm their subjects for 2023. All of the discussions will have taken place previously between the Connect Mentor during Connect, and the classroom teachers during class times.

Staff Professional Practice Day: all Government school Teaching staff are required to have one day per term in 2022 as a Professional Practice Day. As a school we have chosen (on advice from the Department of Education) for all staff to take this on the same day to reduce disruption.

GAT Exam: this exam is sat by every Victorian Student who is sitting at least 1 VCE unit ¾ subject and for 2022 onwards all final year VCAL students are required to sit it.

COVID Safe Practices for Term 3

We still have RATs available from our General Office for students to collect. We do also have masks available for those that require them.

We will be continuing to send out updates if we have any relevant positive cases. If there is not an email that day, there are no relevant cases. We continue to ask that families send any notifications of positive cases by email to connect@tc.vic.edu.au. As a school community, we will continue to use the Air Purifiers within the classroom and school environment, under the direction of the Department of Education and Training.

Subject Expo Week 3

On Wednesday the 27th of July we are holding a subject expo for students and parents to attend. This is your opportunity to find out about the subjects and opportunities for students at TC in 2023. The expo will be running from 2:30 – 4:30 on the Wednesday afternoon and we would love to see you all there. In addition to subject specific information there will be information sessions of moving from Entry into the Flexible Learning Environment (FLE) and from FLE into the VCE, as well as information about the new VCE Vocational Major which is replacing VCAL.

TC semester 1 ReportS Survey

This week we have sent out a survey to parents and carers to try and get some feedback on our semester reports. We are in the process of reviewing our current reporting system and your feedback would be greatly appreciated. The survey can be found here.

Athletics and Indigenous Games Day - tues 16th August

Dear TC Students and Staff,
You are invited to a festival day on Tuesday August 16 at the Doncaster Athletics track on George St, Doncaster.
The festival will include traditional athletics events as well as a special Indigenous games area led by Yorta Yorta organisation Wanyara. The Indigenous games will include a wide range of tag-like games, ball games, spear throwing, and art making. This is a great opportunity to learn how to play these games, have fun, and engage with First Nations' culture in an immersive way.
There will also be a Welcome to Country smoking ceremony, a DJ playing tunes all day, Colour Community competitions like tug-of-war, a sausage sizzle by our VCAL students, and more fun activities around the track.
There will be no classes onsite at TC during that day, so be sure to get your consent form filled in and your colourful outfit ready! See the consent form for details on transport and times. Don't miss out on this deadly day of Indigenous games!

The consent form is live now on compass so be sure to get your form in!

The Pat Cronin Foundation - Be Wise Presentation 🦉

Welcome back! On Wednesday, the Pat Cronin Foundation (PCF) came down to TC and talked to the FLE 2 & 3 students regarding the importance of preventing social violence, making good choices and looking after your mates. In the past PCF has come out to TC but sadly, their work was impacted by COVID, so it was great for them to see them back!

On Saturday, the 16th of April 2016 after playing his first senior footy game, Pat Cronin went out for a few quiet drinks with mates. A brawl started to build outside the pub and Pat stepped in to pull a friend away. He was then, punched in the head from behind. Sadly, Pat was taken to the hospital unconscious and two days later, passed away. After the tragic death of their son, Robyn and Matt Cronin established the PCF in hopes to raise awareness, education and research about the Coward Punch.

Seeking education surrounding the Cowards Punch the foundation has developed a highly successful 'Be Wise presentation' which aims to "address the psychological, social and economic impacts of violent acts... It encourages students to reflect on attitudes and behaviours around anger and aggression and together discuss strategies to deal with these issues personally, and as mates and bystanders".

Throughout the presentation, students gained an insight into Pat Cronin's story and the effects of how students can "create solutions to Be Wise, Think Carefully and Act Kindly". For presentation organiser Ryan Griffith, the talk is "so meaningful and relevant for our students. As young people become young adults it is important to consider the consequences of one’s actions and to know that we can all play a part in reducing violence in our communities".
