Our philosophy and values

Templestowe College is a progressive state school.

As a school community, we have agreed that our purpose is:
“to challenge the status quo, so that everyone is empowered to learn.”

That means that we’re not bound by tradition or doing things the way they’ve always been done. Instead, we’re driven by what works best for our students, staff and families.

Learning without limits

We use best practice, innovation and creative problem solving, often led by students, to truly place young people at the centre of their own education.

Every student is supported to achieve and succeed in a way that aligns with their interests, passions and chosen pathway.

An inclusive, forward-thinking community

We foster an inclusive and supportive community, empowering people to think differently, remain flexible and embrace new ideas or way of doing things.

We also have two cornerstone principles that underpin all we do:

One person policy

All people are worthy of an equal level of respect and trust, regardless of the position they hold within the school. This may diminish or grow based on our actions. While we all have different responsibilities, everyone deserves to be treated with the same level of respect.

TC’s one person policy means everyone is respected...

Both teachers and students, no matter what their role or age is, and I believe that’s really important.
— Charlotte, Student

“Yes” is the default

We encourage all members of our school community to share their ideas or solutions that could create positive change at Templestowe College. For any reasonable request by students, staff, or parents/guardians, the answer is usually “YES”, unless it:

  1. Takes too much time

  2. Costs too much money

  3. Negatively impacts on others.

Our vision in action

We’re not just preparing students for the future; we’re helping them shape it - guided by inclusivity, understanding, mutual respect, curiosity and a belief that learning should never stand still.
