TC 2018-2021 Vision: To co-create high quality learning experiences within an inclusive and supportive community

To the TC Community,

As we near the end of the term I would like to thank everyone in our community for their contributions towards TC for the past 9 weeks. We have had a great term that has seen many progressions across many different areas.

Due to TC being so different there is a lot of interest in how we do things. If we tried to accommodate all of these demands to visit us or talk to us we wouldn’t have enough time to actually concentrate on the running of the school. As a result, on a couple of occasions each term we run “TC Consultancy”, which offers a morning session from 9-12 when staff from other schools can come to TC for a tour. This tour is led by students and myself. We ran one of these mornings on Thursday. Not only did we have a visitor from Miami, USA, we also had someone who had spent quite a bit of time with the school back in 2017. When I spoke to them to ask their view on how the school had moved forward in the time, they commented that everyone as moving around the school and working with more purpose than they had seen before. Their view was that the relationships were still evident, in that our one person policy was still there, but there was far more purpose in how the whole school was working.

It was pleasing to hear this feedback as recognition of all of the hard work that everyone puts in here @ TC. We all know that we aren’t perfect. No school ever is. I do feel proud that we as a school continue to strive to improve both as an inclusive and supportive community and our learning in whatever form that may take.

Next Weeks Announcements

Sports Update

It has been a great week of sport with our EMR swimming team coming 5th out of 40 schools in the state this week.  This is our best result ever at the competition against schools twice our student numbers.  Alex Bloomer, Joel Timlin, Ryan Gan and our U14 relay team consisting of Caleb Bloomer, Charlie Norton, Heath Eyles and Joel Timlin all won gold and will compete at the state championships.  We also won 8 bronze and 4 silver over the day.  A fantastic achievement for those individuals and our swimming team as a whole.

This completes a successful term where we have seen more teams participating in term 1 sport than any other year.  We have also won more competitions than the previous 2 years which demonstrates the hard work our Sport Leaders have been doing to prepare our teams.  If you would like to sign up for term 2 sport- AFL, badminton, netball, soccer then you need to sign up via the link emailed to students and available on compass prior to the end of the term 1.

Peer Support Program Update

Thursday’s Peer Support session was the second last for this year.  This week students investigated the skills of critical and flexible thinking.  Within this session the students engaged with activities that required them to gather information, brainstorm possibilities and think logically to plan and make decisions.  This knowledge is transferable and applicable to most situations in their lives during their school years and beyond.  The highly effective strategy of taking a break is also discussed this week.  The world around us, even our own lives are moving so quickly.  This constant stimulation can make it difficult for us to think clearly about effective and sensible ways to respond to and manage the challenges we face.  As part of the session this week the Entry students and Leaders discussed activities that could help them take a break, slow down or allow themselves to switch off.  Some of these effective but simple tasks could include walking the dog, drawing, going for a run, reading, playing or listening to music.

Student Parent Teacher Interviews

Thank you to all of those who made appointments for the Student Parent Teacher Interviews. We have just over 80% of our students who had an appointment made which is a really positive number for a school such as ours. Should you have any feedback on the way in which the day/evenings are run, please forward this on by emailing to feedback@tc.vic.edu.au as we are always looking to improve the way in which these opportunities take place.

End of Term Arrangements

Please note that the classes will run as normal for all of next week. Classes will end as per the normal time on Friday.

Camp Lost Property - 1 Week to Collect

Students have one week to collect any lost property from Camps. After this the lost property will be donated to charity.

Case of Head Lice at the School

Dear Parents/Guardians

It has come to my attention that some students in the school may have head lice and I seek your cooperation in checking your child’s hair this week .Head lice do not transmit infectious diseases – they are transmitted by having head to head contact with someone who has head lice. You may be reassured to know that head lice are commonly found in places other than at TC. Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of creatures. They have survived living solely on humans for 10,000 years!!!!

 What can you do?

I seek your cooperation in checking your child’s hair and in those instances where head lice or eggs are found, treating your child’s hair.

Please see the attached pamphlet Treating and Controlling Head Lice, from the Department of Human Services. This pamphlet has informative guidelines regarding detecting and treating head lice and eggs.

When can my child return to school?

Health regulations requires that where a child has head lice, that child should not return to school until the day after appropriate treatment has started. Please note, this refers only to those children who have live head lice and does not refer to head lice eggs.

TC is aware that head lice can be a sensitive issue and is committed to maintaining your confidentiality.

Work and Study Habits Index (WASHI) Explained

Staff will be giving feedback to students on their work and study habits shortly. This will be released through Compass. The WASHI gives a student immediate feedback on their work habits within each classroom. For an explanation of the WASHI, please click on the link below.

Traffic Flow through the school at Peak times

A reminder that we have a one way system in place during peak pick up and drop off times. All pick ups and drop offs should take place at the space by the Astroturf and Sports Centre. The space along the front of the school is NOT the space to pick up and drop off as this causes traffic delays on Cypress Avenue and Lynwood Parade.

USE OF DISABLED PARKING SPACES

Please note we have several students who require use of the Disabled Parking Spaces. Please do not park in these unless it is your right to do so.

Have a good weekend,

Peter Ellis
