Next Week @ TC Announcements
To the TC Community,
As we approach the end of the term we can all reflect on what a busy term it has been. Staff are currently busy writing end of term reports, as there will be a short comment for each student in every subject this term to give some indication about the progress being made this term, which will go alongside the progress being reported in the WASHI and the Rubrics available on line through Compass.
It has been a huge term 1. We probably wont experience another term 1 like this for quite a few years. One of the big new implementations for term 1 has been the introduction of the SSDP, which will continue to develop over the 4 years of the TC 2018-2021 Strategic Plan. I have spent quite a few days of this week being able to sit in on some SSDP sessions and there is some really great learning taking place during these sessions. The students offering each other support through this program, and also the real world learning taking place, demonstrates the potential of the time. Through term 2, and beyond, we will be sharing the strategies used throughout the groups so that others can see the potential of the program to further develop their own learning in this time. This time is being used for a different type of learning. We are not using it to just fill young people with information, but are looking to help develop the transferable skills that can be applied across life. There is currently research out there that specifies that the skills that you acquire for one job, are then transferable to 13 different jobs. For those interested, there is a great piece of research written by the Foundation for Young Australians that identifies the skills that young people will need when they go out into the workplace. This research can be found by clicking here.
A reminder that TC finishes at the normal time this Thursday. Classes run up until the end of the day. Students will then return on Tuesday 17th April to start classes at the normal time.

This Weeks Announcements
Over the next week you may receive an SMS, from TC through Compass, over attendance. This SMS is automatically sent if a student has been marked as absent during period 1. It is a priority of the Department of Education, and of ourselves that all students are accounted for during the school day.
The SMS, which will arrive at about 10 am, will tell you that your child has been marked as an "unexplained absence" during period 1. If your child is away and you have marked this on Compass already or you have rung our attendance line to leave a message, then you will not get the SMS.
If you receive the the SMS and your child is away from school, please log onto Compass to record the reason for this absence. f you do not do this you should expect a phone call from a Head of House to follow up with you at some point later on in the day. We would like to keep these phone calls to a minimum, so please log onto Compass to record an absence if this is known.
Our staff are taking a lot of care to mark rolls accurately to help this process. If you know of an absence, please log this on Compass so that we can account for everyone here @ TC.
A reminder that Mop up day is next Monday 26/3/2018. Students who have not been photographed should report to the Resource Centre on Monday Morning. Staff who have not had their photographs taken should report period one or two if not teaching otherwise at recess.
Currently the Compass order link is down. This will be reactivated and we will let you know when this is the case.
When ordering the packs the group shot will be the SSDP group and SSDP teacher. Families will be alerted via email when sibling and other photographs taken on the day are available to order.
School Hoodies Still Available to Collect
School Hoodies are still available to collect from the Resource Centre. All students need to collect this and sign for them when they collect them before school, at recess or lunchtime, or after school.
New Hoodie Order
It is great to see so many students and staff loving the new TC Hoodies. I have had many student enquire if we will be doing a new order just students that have missed out. The answer is yes!
Before the order is set up we need to decide which colours will be available to order. It is important to note that we require a minimum of 25 people to order each design for it to go ahead. With that in mind I am proposing the following colours and designs. (examples of navy below)
- Navy – striped sleeve
- Navy – large “Templestowe College” front
- Teal – striped sleeve
- Teal – large “Templestowe College” front
- Purple – striped sleeve
- Red – Striped sleeve
- Pink (NEW!) – large “Templestowe College” front
If you would like to suggest a change to these or a new colour please email me by MONDAY 23rd MARCH. This is so I can hopefully contact reform and open a new order before the holidays.

Movie Screening Fundraiser Organised by Students as Part of SSDP
Hi Templestowe College Community!
Our names are Zahra, Emma and Willow and we are students at Templestowe college with a dream to make a difference in the lives of others. On Friday the 23rd and Wednesday the 28th of March we are screening two family movies as a fundraiser to help the innocent civilian victims of the Syrian war. Entry to the movies (which are at PAC) is free with the option of a gold coin donation. We will be selling food on the day so please come and buy as all the money we make will go toward the ‘Doctors Without Borders’ and ‘Islamic Relief Worldwide’ charities. Both charities have been checked on charity navigator and have a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
We have arranged the movie so that parents can come and enjoy, and it ends at 3.15 leaving enough time to go and pick up any primary school children 😊 both movies have a rating of PG.
People of all ages are welcome, please attend and help alleviate the crisis currently occurring in Syria.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all on Friday XD

This purpose of the VCE handbook is to help students, parents, and staff understand how the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) works at TC. It outlines how the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority’s (VCAA) rules and instructions are administered and contains important school policies and procedures all members of the TC community must be aware of.
TC requires all VCE students (Units 1 - 4) to ‘acknowledge’ their understanding of our VCE policies & procedures. Students can access the online form via their email and/or their Compass Newsfeed.

TC Cafe Menu
Please find below our new menu for the TC Cafe.
Some families may have received notifications about VCE Attendance and it being below 90%. Please be aware that the attendance figures that are used for VCE attendance are taken at the end of each week through a report that is produced at 1.30pm each Friday afternoon. These figures are used to identify any student that is below the minimum 90% requirement. Once identified, each student for each VCE subject they are below 90% receive a Compass notification via a Compass Chronicle. The Compass Chronicle is created by the school’s Attendance Officer and the communication from Compass at that point is automated. The communication is intended to make each student and family aware so that it can be acted upon and help to avoid any future issues with successfully achieving an ‘S’ outcome.
If you believe that this is received in error, please access Compass and look into your (child’s) attendance, ensuring that the dates used are from the 1 Feb 2018 to the most recent Friday. For example: if a notification is received next week then access Compass and use the dates 1 Feb 2018 to 23 Feb 2018 to filter the information. If you still believe this to be an error please email the school’s Attendance Officer, Sjin Kim (email@example.com)
VCE Information Session for Parents
The powerpoint that was used for the VCE Information Session for Parents is attached.
One specific question raised related to the duration of time that can be taken to complete VCE. VCAA have clarified this morning that there is no limit to the validity of VCE units of study, essentially meaning that the VCE can be done over a period longer than three years, which is often the default duration for most schools. Whilst this offers great flexibility for students that need this time, it may not be the best way to maximise achievement.
For parents of students undertaking VCE study please take the time to view it and feel free to contact Matthew Daly (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you have any questions or require clarification on any VCE-related matters.
A student at TC has been diagnosed with Scarlet Fever. Scarlet Fever is a contagious bacterial throat infection that also features a red ('scarlet') rash. It is spread through coughing/sneezing, contact with contaminated surface and making physical contact with the infected person.
Symptoms of scarlet fever usually appear between one and three days after infection and include a very red sore throat and a red rash.
Red blotches are the first sign of the rash, which then changes to look like sunburn and feel like sandpaper. The rash will probably appear about two days after the child starts feeling ill, but can appear before they feel sick or up to a week later.
They may also have:
- a whitish coating on their tongue or throat
- red bumps on their tongue – it looks like a strawberry
- abdominal pain, nausea & vomiting
- very sore throat and tonsils – swallowing is difficult
- swollen glands
- aches all over their body
Treatment is normally a course of antibiotics from your doctor. If your child appears to be unwell with any of the above symptoms, please see your GP.

There will shortly be a letter available concerning the NAPLAN tests taking place at the beginning of May. From my experience there is a wide range of emotions felt by students towards these tests, from excitement through to anxiety. As we are a Department of Education school, all students in Entry and those who sat the NAPLAN tests 2 years ago as Entry Students are required to sit the tests. For a student to withdraw from the tests they can only do so by parents request. The website for NAPLAN (https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/school-support/student-participation) states: “however students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/carer if there are religious beliefs or philosophical objections to testing”. For this to happen you will need to contact the school to obtain a withdrawal form before the tests are sat. Please see the letter when it is available for more information.

TC Café News
Healthy food for healthy minds. Our aim is to create wholesome, fresh great tasting food options daily.
Welcome to TC Café, firstly we would like to congratulate Joy on becoming a grandmother again to twins and wish her all the best for her on her long service leave. She will be dearly missed.
It has been a great start to the year with so many friendly faces popping into the café to say hello. As you may have noticed we have made a few changes inside and outside the café with the addition of more tables and some beautiful plants.
We have been trialling a few menu options and have found the homemade granola cups, yoghurt fruit cups, fruit salad cups, Parma melts and pasta are extremely popular.
We are open in the morning from 8.00am for breakfast.
The new menu should be finalised next week, thank you for your patience. And on behalf of all of us here have a fantastic weekend.
Jo, Shelley and Marj
