What stands out to me at TC is the relationships between teachers and students and the way they interact with each other as equals.

Doing things differently at TC

The recent story of Templestowe College, or “TC” as we like to call it, is one evolution shaped by the many students, staff and families who have been part of our community.

As a progressive school, we continue to challenge our own thinking; with the goal of empowering every member of our community to find their own version of success.

A new direction

Founded in 1994, TC began its transformation in 2009. Rather than remaining a traditional state school, we embraced new ways of teaching and learning, becoming leaders in personalised, truly student-centred, learning. “TC”, as we now call it, was born.

By 2015 we had dropped all reference to year levels and moved from personalised to individualised learning — and now to co-creation. Students co-create their own programs and pathways with the guidance and support of staff and families.

An education evolution

Since then, the school has grown rapidly, with 1,250 students and a total community of over 1,400 people.

Our programs have continued to evolve as we meet the needs of our ever-changing community. Templestowe College is now recognised as one of the most innovative schools in Australia.

Empowered voices

Here, students know their voices matter. They have real agency in shaping their school and their education.

Students sit on our School Council and our Student Leadership program is co-designed by students and staff. In 2017, a student-led campaign brought about the removal of compulsory uniforms. Students can also propose new elective subjects if they can demonstrate curriculum value and student interest.

Future focus

Our Strategic Plan builds on these strengths, defining what it means to be an empowered learner and developing broader measures of success that go beyond test scores and grades.

At TC, we’re proving that when students are empowered to lead their own learning, extraordinary things happen.
